Drzewo herbaciane, z którego pozyskiwany jest olejek, pochodzi z Australii.
Swoją nazwę zawdzięcza jasnemu kolorowi kory. Nazwę „drzewo herbaciane” nadał mu kapitan J. Cook, który zauważył, że australijscy Aborygeni piją, tak jak Anglicy herbatę, napar z liści tego drzewa. Stosowali go również w celach leczniczych. Napar okazał się cennym lekiem i szybko pojawił się na brytyjskich statkach.
Drzewa herbaciane pokrywają duże obszary Australii.
Jednak do celów produkcyjnych drzewa herbaciane uprawiane są na plantacjach, gdzie wysokość drzewek to ok. 150 cm. Drzewa są ścinane w całości i rozdrabniane przez kombajny, a następnie przetwarzane na olejki. Olejek eteryczny z drzewa herbacianego otrzymywany jest przez destylację liści i gałązek z parą wodną. Ścięte drzewa odrastają po 2-3 latach. Plantacje gwarantują jednolitą jakość i właściwości wyprodukowanych olejków. Obecnie plantacje drzew herbacianych istnieją już w wielu różnych regionach świata.
Olejek eteryczny z drzewa herbacianego w Europie zyskał popularność w latach 20-tych XX wieku.
Stosowany jest w aromaterapii, a także w kosmetyce, w wyrobach toaletowych, a nawet w medycynie. Olejek z drzewa herbacianego okazał się jednym z najcenniejszych naturalnych antyseptyków, do tego bezpiecznym w stężeniach terapeutycznych.
W aromaterapii olejek z drzewa herbacianego stosowany jest do:
- masażu
- kąpieli,
- kompresów,
- inhalacji,
- nawaniania powietrza w mieszankach łagodzących: zdenerwowanie, szok, histerię, przeziębienia, grypy, infekcje bakteryjne, wirusowe, grzybice i inne mikroorganizmy, stany zapalne, infekcje i grzybice skóry, kurzajki, brodawki, grzybice i stany zapalne narządów płciowych, pleśniawki pochwy, trądzik, poparzenia.
